It's the most eagerly anticipated red carpet event of the entire award season and this years 86th Annual Academy Awards did not disappoint. As the Hollywood stars walked the pre show red carpet, it was apparent that they had brought their style A-game. As more and more stars arrived it became clear which trends were rocking this years Oscar red carpet. Lets take a quick look at the
top 5 trends of the night....
1. Strapless
Strapless gowns were all over the Oscar red carpet. Some starlets opting for a sharp and structured look such as Amy Adams (Gucci), Jennifer Lawrence (Dior) and Kristen Bell (Roberto Cavalli). All three pulled their hair back and wore minimal jewelry, however Kristen opted for a much more embellished dress than the other two who went for sleeker looks. Others that chose the strapless trend went for more feminine versions such as Sandra Bullock who wore a draped navy (Alexander McQueen) gown with a sweetheart neckline, Margot Robbie (Saint Lauren) wore black with a large sequined bow at the back and model Chrissy Teigen (Naeem Khan) who opted for a full skirt with a pink floral pattern was right on trend for spring/summer '14.

2. Neutral Embellishments
The nude toned embellished dress is seen on every red carpet. Thankfully, the ladies of Hollywood kept it classy and steered clear of any peek-a-boo effects for the Academy Awards!! Oscar winner Cate Blanchett looked elegant in this romantic (Armani Prive) gown which was dripping in Swarovski Crystals and giant sequins. E! News host Giuliana Rancic looked like a fairytale princess in her full tulle skirt and embellished bodice (Paolo Sebastian). Angelina Jolie shimmered on the red carpet in a long sleeve (Elie Saab) dress that featured sheer panelling and a plunging V at the back. Naomi Watts proved how sexy it can be to cover up, as she strutted her stuff in a white (Calvin Klein) fitted dress with capped sleeves and a high neckline.

3. LBD
Black isn't usually the go to colour for a red carpet event in spring, considering the runway shows in New York, London and Paris were full of many vibrant colours to choose from. This Oscar red carpet however was covered in it. When a black gown is done right, it is classy, elegant and show stopping. Here are a few ladies that did it right on the night. Anne Hathaway usually favors a sleek, figure hugging silhouette (I would too if I had a body like that) and this red carpet was no different. She wore a (Gucci) dress similar in style to the one she wore last year to the Oscars. It had the same halter neckline and long slit at the back. A bit of edge was added with the silver stud-like embellishments on the bodice of the dress. The black looked elegant with her pale skin and cropped hairdo. A heavily pregnant Olivia Wilde showed up in a black high collar (Valentino) gown. From the front it was simple and covered up, her face highlighted with a beautiful drop earring, but in the back was an unexpected cut out detail and contrasting white train. This next woman that opted for a black gown, knocked it out the ball park. Charlize Theron. Her mermaid style (Dior) dress featured a plunging neckline, invisible straps and a pleated train. Just bordering 5ft 10inches, Charlize looked statuesque posing for pictured in this gown.

4. White Jackets
Fashion is not just for women! More and more, men are starting to take a real interest in how they look and in current fashion trends, and I love it. Most men opt for the classic black tuxedo, which is perfectly fine, nothing sexier than a man in a tux. But this Oscar red carpet we saw quite a few taking a chance on the white/ivory jacket. Ryan Seacrest wore Burberry, black trousers, white shirt black bowtie and ivory jacket. Next to show up was Jared Leto who switched it up a bit with a satin, burgundy coloured bowtie and crisp white jacket. Matthew McConaughey looked dapper accepting his Oscar in his black Dolce and Gabbana waistcoat, black bowtie and cream jacket. All three men looked sharp and fashion forward in their white blazerss. However, to all men out there wishing to try something new, please, please do not try to imitate Pharrells short tuxedo look?? It's never ok! #disaster #notevengettinapicture

5. Plunging Necklines
This was by far my favourite trend of the night. As we'v just seen, Charlize Theron was one that opted for this trend but she's not alone. Julia Roberts also decided to take the plunge in a black lace (Givenchy) peplum gown. The panel of lace covering the plunge allowed this look to stay age appropriate for Julia. Its an understated sexiness. A lady making headlines, not only for her award winning acting but for her amazing sense of style is Lupita Nyong'o. This beauty went for a (Prada) dress that ticked many of the spring/ summer 14 trends. A plunged neckline, pastel colour and pleats. She pulls it off so effortlessly. Personally the headband wasn't for me but she still looked stunning. My best dressed of the entire night, was the sensational Kate Hudson. I love this woman. Metalic dresses were another trend clogging the Oscar red carpet (another trend but could only choose 5) but Kate knocks them all out of the water in her jaw dropping white/silver (Atelier Versace) gown. The dress featured a deep V plunging neckline in the front, and a mid length draped cape complete with shoulder pads at the back. She was the picture of old Hollywood glamour, with her side swept loose curls and satin train. She finished off the look with smokey eyes and a killer pose. She can do no wrong!
